Matchday, a Web3 gaming startup, has decided to focus on soccer, and it is backed by Lionel Messi!

Matchday has raised $21 million to create a collection of games, thanks to Lionel Messi’s venture investment firm.

Courtside Ventures, HackVC, Capricorn Investment Group, and Horizons Ventures are some of  Matchday’s additional major donors.

Matchday and FIFA agreement

A multi-year agreement between Matchday and FIFA will enable the company to embrace prestige competitions, such as the Men’s and Women’s World Cups, elite football tournaments, and male and female football representatives.

With this agreement, Matchday allows players to assemble teams and obtain digital cards of their personal football heroes.

According to Sebastien de Halleux, the Chief Gaming Officer of Matchday, all gamers will be able to utilize and play our games, which are built around ownership rights of virtual items.

Matchday created a limited-time mini-game during the 2022 FIFA World Cup that spread to about 2 million NFT player cards to about 600,000 people.

Lionel Messi’s past experience in the NFT world

The investment in Matchday is not the first experience of Lionel Messi in the NFT world.

Lionel Messi was appointed the NFT game Sorare as a brand ambassador in November 2022. Also, he has already teamed up with the makers of fan tokens, Socios.com. In addition to these two experiences, Messi partnered with Bitget for the marketing campaign of the company.

As it can be understood from these examples, Lionel Messi is dealing with the NFT and Web3 space closely.
