Claudia Katz, the executive producer of Futurama, has recently confirmed that the upcoming revival will maintain its satirical humor. The revived series will tackle significant events from the 2020s, such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). New episodes of the animated sitcom are set to premiere on July 24, exclusively on Hulu.

The sneak peek trailer unveils glimpses of the new episodes for the upcoming season. The Entertainment Identifier Registry additionally reveals episode titles, providing insights into plotlines concerning COVID-19 vaccines, cancel culture, Bitcoin, and NFTs.

Claudia Katz stated about the revival:

“We have a vaccine episode. We’ve finally conquered COVID-19 in 3023, so that’s a very fun exploration of the science, vaccines, and just a commentary on that whole situation. There’s a fun Bitcoin episode. And we have an NFT episode which, of course, no one understands, which is sort of the joke.”

The Bitcoin/NFT-themed episode of Futurama depicts the characters immersed in a wild west scenario. Fry duels with the Borax Kid, an unconventional cowboy made of Silicon. Leela’s observation about the absence of law and order in “crypto country” hints at this potentially being the episode above. The episode is titled as “How The West Was 1010001”.

Throughout its existence, Futurama has consistently employed satire to depict contemporary events humorously. Whether it be mocking American elections or addressing the issue of global warming, the show has always reflected society’s realities. However, fans may have concerns arising from the revival of Futurama on Comedy Central.

Episodes that attempted to satirize current events were among the weakest, lacking substantial commentary. Such incidents include the early iPhone craze, gay marriage, and controversies surrounding then-President Barack Obama’s birthplace.

The upcoming episodes of Futurama may appear outdated due to the rapidly evolving news cycle. For instance, the jokes about COVID-19 pandemic and crypto may already feel passé when the new season premieres. Additionally, the current state of the NFT market poses another factor. Some jokingly suggest that the market might be dead when the Futurama episodes are released.

Futurama focuses on NFTs and cryptocurrencies.

What is Futurama?

Matt Groening created the American animated science fiction sitcom Futurama for the Fox Broadcasting Company. Later on, Comedy Central revived the show.

The storyline revolves around Philip J. Fry, a professional slacker who undergoes cryogenic preservation for 1000 years. He is then revived on December 31, 2999. Fry secures employment at an interplanetary delivery company. He works alongside Leela, a one-eyed individual, and Bender, a robotic companion. Groening conceived the series during the mid-1990s while working on The Simpsons.
